Marseilles, Day 4 - Back to Paris

Up early and down to the station.  The trip back took a little longer (3 hours and fifteen minutes) since it stopped twice, but we were still back in time for Virginia to get to school.

A few final thoughts and pictures before leaving Marseilles.  Some of the buildings are very attractive and in general there is a certain "Spanish" look to many of them.

Many of the official buildings are quite grand.  For example the Opera House, the law courts and the Stock Exchange.

Just in front of the last of these is a marvellous carousel.  In fact, the French are enamoured of carousels.  There seem to be hundreds of these all over Paris and Marseilles, ranging from quite small ones to the double decker one in front of the Marseilles Stock Exchange.

Although the Marseilles history museum was closed, the "jardin des vestiges", a garden containing the stabilised archaeological remains of classical ramparts, port buildings, a necropolis and so on is a fascinating insight into the early days of this port city.

Finally, here, as in Paris, there are many markers reminding one of the horrors of the Second World War and particularly the Nazi atrocities against the Jewish population.
