Paris, Day 21

We have been on the Place du Tertre many times and have watched the various "artists" at work.  Some are genuine like the caricaturists and the sketchers and the people who cut the silhouettes.  But there are other that appear to be more serious painters.  We, however, have our doubts.  There is one chap who has been painting the left eye of a particular portrait for may weeks now.  We are sure a lot of the finished paintings that are for sale are done elsewhere, possibly by other people.  Tourists like to see the "artists" at work and like to take photographs of them.  We arrived early enough today to watch them set up.  Individual "artists" seem to have their own area and we wondered how this came about.  Do they pay rent for the right to have their work on show and to "strut" their territory?

The "artists"

One group of artists that are genuine are the silhouette cutters.  We have watched in amazement as they produce a finished product in a matter of minutes using only their scissors.  But, make your own judgement.  Here are silhouettes of people you may know.

Female Silhouette
After a very pleasant (but expensive) coffee, we went on to the tasks of the day.  For Virginia it was a school day and for me more work on my U3A presentations.

Tomorrow we have an early start.  We are off to Marseilles for the weekend!
