Paris. A Visit to the Musee d'Orsay

Degas, Le Pedicure

Considering yesterday's blog, I thought it would be appropriate to start today's with a picture by Edgar Degas entitled Le Pedicure.

Today was the day for which we had purchased tickets to the Manet exhibition at the Musee d'Orsay.

We fronted up at 10:00 joining the shorter queue for those who had the wisdom and foresight to buy their tickets in advance.  We were soon inside and went immediately to the Manet exhibition.  Lots of great works from all over the world, but some of our favourites were missing including " Le Bar des Folies-Bergère ".  Even so, it was a sensational range and beautifully presented.  I have always liked Manet, but have acquired a few new favourites. Here, for example, is one I had never seen before but thought was absolutely charming.

After admiring the Manets we went for lunch in the exquisite Bel Epoque dining room at the museum.  Good food, excellent service and great style.  It was a real treat.

After a leisurely meal we spent some time looking at the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists and then wandered over to see the section dedicated to the Van Gogh paintings.  While I don't know why anyone would want to take photographs oif pictures, I was saddened to find that photography is now banned within the d"Orsay.  It is a beautiful building, airy and spacious within and very elegant with lovely statuary on the main level.  Even outside there are some lovely pieces of statuary and those, of course, can be photographed.

We finished our day by walking through Les jardins des Tuileries and catching the Metro home.
